Zeus beloved!

Rhodes was the beloved Nymph of Zeus and it's said that the god never left her. Sunny most days of the year, the capital of the Dodecanese combines, as few islands, the cosmopolitan character with the tradition, but also the rich natural environment.

The nature lovers will adore it, the sports lover will find their paradise, the wine lovers will be lost in its vineyards and those who love culture will ... settle in its medieval castles! We mention here a few pixels of the unique wealth that the traveler can discover in the island.

The pine-clad Akramitis, the Armenistis cape, Ataviros, the sea area of Karabola – the Glifada Bay, the Prophet Elias with countless wild flowers, the Seven Springs and the Butterflies are the 5 areas of Rhodes that have been included in the Natura 2000 network and occupy approximately the 25% of the total area of the island. Rhodes has over 20 kinds of protected habitats, and many species of fauna and flora. The island has recorded 19 important species of plants, while dozens of platoni deers live there, as well as small horses in the area of the Archangel. These figures show that it still maintains the great natural wealth, instead of in the whirlwind of 'tourism' and overall 'utilization'.

The highest mountain of Rhodes, Ataviros to 1,215 m, dominates among the hilly villages, Emponas and Saint Isidoros. The view from the top, where there are remnants of the Temple of Zeus, is unique and compensates those who attempt the climbing. To the southeast of Rhodes, where the sea has a big depth, underwater springs enrich the area with water rich in nutrients, useful in many marine organisms. So, we meet here ecosystems with hundreds of species of fish, sponges and corals, as well as large populations of rare and protected species of marine mammals such as dolphins, whales and sea turtles.

The medieval city of Rhodes, a creation of the
Οrder of the Knights of St. John and a world heritage site since 1988, with stunning walls, squares and temples. Choose one of the ten entrances and meet the street of Knights with the imposing buildings, the Palace of the Grand Master, built in 1346, destroyed by an explosion in 1865 and rebuilt by the Italian commander of the island in 1937-40. The archaeological museum which is housed in the impressive building of the Hospital of the Knights, the Byzantine Museum, the folklore Bazaar in Socratus  street and the mosque of Suleiman.

Rodini Park, 3 km. from the city center, is a green ravine, a recreation area with paths, springs and the opportunity for boating in the big canal-part of the roman aqueduct, which was in use until the 19th century. Lindos, where you will find unique captain mansions, Byzantine churches, stunning pebbled mosaics and, of course, the famous Acropolis of a total area of 8 acres, a magical place that exists since the Neolithic age. Since then, it has undergone several modifications up to the years of Byzantium.
