The Alonissos Port

Transportation
A bus departs from Patitiri, the island port, for some of the other parts of the island but other than that, there is no other means of transportation. Consequently, the best way to explore Alonissos is to rent a vehicle, preferably a car, as the roads are quite steep for motorcycles and bicycles.

Alonnisos has only a municipal and a private bus, both of them starting in the Port (Patitiri), with the ticket costing only 1.60 euros. The Municipal Bus goes to Palio Horio and Steni Vala. The private bus coonnects the Port with Palio Horio, Hrisi Milia, Kokkinokastro, and Lefto Gialo. There are more routes during summer, almost one per half an hour. Tickets can be bought in the island's mini markets and selected travel agencies and cafes with the special sign. An alternative way to move in Alonnisos is sea-taxis, that can be found in the Port and carry passengers to the island's most popular beaches. Finally, for those who wish a more romantic walk, there are signed courses and paths, that can be crossed by foot.

It is an organized beach with umbrellas and deck chairs, it has a canteen and nearby there are taverns. Other beaches that distinguish, are Votsi and Roussoum Gialos.

Don't forget to taste the delicious pies of Alonissos, like tiropita(cheesepie) and  tiganopita made with traditional recipes. Also, distinct flavors from the island are kakavia, donuts or else foyskakia, the rice pudding and the pecan pie. Also taste grouper stew!

Alonnisos "musts"

  • Kokkinovrahos beach is a unique sight and a "must" destination to enjoy the sea or have a picnic under pine-trees. The bright red colors set up an extraordinary scenery and offer countless opportunities for great shots.
  • Ask for the "Alonnisos Paths Guide", a small book with the island's path and their secrets. Even if you don't like walking, you'll definitely want to cross and meet most of them.

Alonissos doesn't have any villages or market places outside the city. Make sure you'll have anything you want in any place you go, especially on beaches.

The island doesn't have high-standard roads, so drive slowly and carefully.

Be careful, when you are on a beach. Penalties for pollution are too heavy and some of them are discreetly guarded.
